Five Complete Hercule Poirot Novels
This volume contains five “Hercule Poirot” mystery novels in its 663 pages. This large size makes it somewhat unwieldy to read except at a table, compared to a “2-in-1” format. These were written in the 1930s and reflect the culture and outlook of that era. Agatha Christie was famous ever since her novel “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd” was published. Raymond Chandler wrote his essay on “The Simple Art of Murder” where he commented on novels written to provide a puzzle for readers to solve. Chandler said experienced police detectives would quickly solve most of these cases, but few readers have the experience and background.
“Hercule Poirot” is the most famous fictional detective since “Sherlock Holmes’. Both had a partner to record these events. Agatha Christie’s second husband was an archaeologist and she traveled to the Near East with him. This explains the background of some of these stories. These novels are entertainments. If you want education about murders and other crimes look for the True Crime section. Agatha Christie won the title as the “Greatest Mystery Writer” for her many novels written over fifty years. She also wrote the “Miss Marple” series of novels; some like these better. This lists the title of the book, its original publication date, and a brief comment.
1) “Thirteen at Dinner” (1933). Poirot is asked for help by an actress whose husband was murdered.
2) “Murder on the Orient Express” (1933). This train becomes snowbound, then one passenger is murdered. Who did it? [This is another version of a locked room mystery.]
3) “The ABC Murders” (1935). Women are murdered in alphabetic sequence. Is there a motive? [Only in fiction can such murders happen.]
4) “Cards on the Table” (1936). Poirot plays cards with four people. Then the host is found dead.
5) “Death on the Nile” (1937). Poirot goes on a cruise in Egypt. One passenger, a young woman, is found dead. [Another version of a locked room murder where the guilty is close.]

Wonderful selection of Poirot novels

I use to not be overly fond of anthologies of any sort but I suppose time and age had mellowed me somewhat; well, that and book shelves that have long ago over flowed. I find myself purchasing more collections now rather than going the "one book at a time" route.
I purchased this one at a library sale (someone had donated it) for .25 cents and trust me folks, that was quite a well spent two bits.
As the title states this is a collection of five of dame Christie's novels featuring the little Belgium detective Herecule Poirot. These novels have been selected to feature Christie at the height of her power as a writer and in the publishers opinion; an opinion I happen to agree with, are the five Poirot novels which best represent this most interesting of Christie's characters. The novels included here are:
Murder on the Orient Express
Thirteen at Dinner
The ABC Murders
Cards on the Table
and
Death on the Nile
Now I will not lie to you and tell you that these are new reads for me. I have read each of these novels several times over the years and plan to read them again not far down the road. This book makes these particular novels quite handy and I do plan to purchase more like collections as I find them.
This is a hard cover book and the binding is well done. At 663 pages the font is a bit smaller than I usually prefer but it is never-the-less readable...despite the fact that I am getting a bit long in the tooth.
If you are a Christie fan in general or a Poirot fan in particular, then this is a great book to add to your collection. (Actually, I think I have three of these on my Kindle also, but old habits die hard and I still prefer to hold a real book in my lap.
