This is not A TOWN LIKE ALICE. It is not even an abridged version. It is a 100 page synopsis written like a middle school "D" student's book report. Do not buy this version. I was anticipating the pleasure of reading a much loved favorite. I feel cheated and misled. Amazon, if you must sell this, tell your customers what they are spending their time and money on, and that it is not what is advertised. This cover illustration shows a soldier in silhouette. Can I submit this with 0 stars?

BEWARE - as others have noted (but I unfortunately did not read until after I bought this version), there is one Kindle edition of this book that is an ABRIDGED version; however, it does not say it is abridged anywhere on the cover, intro, or back cover. The abridged/children's (middle school + I would say) version just tells the story. It's an interesting plot, but all the beauty of the language is gone. I bought this to read for my book club; because I now know the plot, I won't be able to appreciate author's craft during the discussion. PLEASE correct the description!

This review is for the KINDLE VERSION!!! The kindle version is a horrible travesty. Horrible. If I could give it negative stars I would. All of Nevil Shute's beautiful prose is gone, the book is just a crappy overview of a wonderful book. I am so irritated that I actually paid money for it - and now I evidently can't return it.
