"I hope, or I could not live"

As with many of H.G.'s stories, it is a tail told by a narrator. Also at first, you may not notice his slipping in of social underpinnings.

Pendrick, our narrator starts out trying to tell how he was disenshipped and disappeared at sea for a year to turn up alive. His explanation is so fantastic that no one believes him. However after we read his account, we do.

He spent the bulk of his time on an isolated island with the mysterious Dr. Moreau, Moreau's right hand man Montgomery, and a menagerie of unique people. Where did they come from and what are they doing on this island? As the story unfolds, Pendrick realizes he is the next either on the operating table or for supper or maybe something more sinister.

This story has shades of William Golding's "Lord of the Flies". However, I can swear that I work with the very same creatures every day. Moreover, I will never look at my cat in the same way.

Somehow, I missed the movie version of this book, so I cannot compare them.

Pretty good collection needs a more accessible TOC.

A fair-to-middlin' compilation of the works of HG Wells, including some of his most popular and his lesser-known works. Note that the Table of Contents, oddly, cannot be accessed from the menu. It's there, though, just after the title page. This should be remedied, as these stories tend to be longish, and flipping through pages is an exercise in digital aerobics. Otherwise, well worth the read if you enjoy Wells, as I do. Moreau is here, and War of the Worlds, the Time Machine, the Invisible Man, and much more.

Excellent

Seamus Heaney is an Irish treasure in literature. His works display the "concrete reality" that he aimed for in his poetry. My favorite poem is "Digging". He is talented in fusing agric./pol./soc./religion themes together in one poem.

I have not read all of these poems as yet as each one calls me to read it over and over. Heaney's startling analogies and humorous twists charm me and shake me up. Listen to Heaney's music in "the pedal treads hanging relieved of the boot of the law" in describing a constable's bicycle.

Heaney's "Selected Poems" shows a good picture of the poet's development up to "Station Island" and the sonnets of Glanmore and Clearances. Like Yeats, Heaney had to go through a few volumes before he "became good": except for "The Tolland Man," the poems selected from his first four collections are flat, even the much-anthologized "Digging," which perseveres in anthologies only because it illustrates Heaney's overall philosophy. With the bog poems from "North," Heaney comes into his own, and he has managed to remain at this consistent level of excellence since then.

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific 19th- and 20th century science fiction writer. Together with French author Jules Verne, Wells has been called "The Father of Science Fiction." Wells was an outspoken socialist and sympathetic to pacifist views. Best known for his early works of science fiction, his later works became increasingly political in nature.

Acceptable but perfunctory bundle of 25 Wells' novels

REVISED 06/29/16: This older Halcyon collection is a good value for a mere $.99, especially since Halcyon recently offered this very same package for twice the price. Yes, these novels can all be had as public domain freebies, but to have 25 of them so conveniently bundled for such a low price is worth considering. Since this was published, however, other more complete $.99 sets have become available, making this no longer the slam-dunk deal it once was.

Wells wrote various types of books including particularly great, pioneering science-fiction novels; those wonderful SF novels are included in this set (which is primarily why I bought it). He also wrote social and political novels, romances, and light-hearted satires, also included.

This Halcyon set has an active TOC and contains 25 of some 31 of Wells' novels currently in the U.S. public domain. The 6 NOT provided are: "The Sea Lady" and "Marriage" (these 2 being easily obtainable as public domain freebies in the Kindle Store), "Joan and Peter," "Undying Fire," "Bealby," and "The Prophetic Trilogy." In addition to their absence, my other criticism is that "The Time Machine" (the well-known title story no less!) SHOULD contain italicized words which are NOT so indicated (in any manner) in this edition. Some other novels in this set do show emphasis by ALL CAPS and some others use before-and-after lines ( __like this__), but more than a few others also seem to be altogether lacking any such indication.

While the omission of certain stories and italics was not a deal-breaker to me when I first purchased it for $.99, there are now better sets available for the same price. In fact, the edition I would currently recommend is a nicely-formatted, virtually-complete, $.99 set titled H.G. WELLS: COLLECTED NOVELS, SHORT STORIES, ESSAYS, AND ARTICLES from e-artnow, which I purchased to replace this as my "keeper copy."

I saw the movie first. The book difference was a surprise

An unnamed time traveler sees the future of man (802,701 A.D.) and then the inevitable future of the world. He tells his tale in detail. Some of the details are fascinating as the traveler come to discover the secret of the results of social striation over centuries which eventually creates two separate species from humans. Which species is the more human? Can anything be done to prevent or correct this?

I grew up on the Rod Taylor /George Pal movie. When I started the book I expected it to be slightly different with a tad more complexity as with most book/movie relationships. I was surprised to find the reason for the breakup of species (Morlock and Eloi) was class Vs atomic (in later movie versions it was political). I could live with that but to find that some little pink thing replaced Yvette Mimieux was too munch.

After all the surprises we can look at the story as unique in its time, first published in 1895, yet the message is timeless. The writing and timing could not have been better. And the ending was certainly appropriate for the world that he describes. Possibly, if the story were written today the species division would be based on eugenics.

Great Collection of Classic Novels Worth Your Time

The definitive collection on the novels of H.G. Wells, this shows his well known classics such as "The Time Machine" and "The Island of Dr. Moreau" but some other lesser known works such as "The Wonderful Visit" (which should be a classic in its own right) "The Food of the Gods" and "The Sleeper Awakes." All of these novels are filled with social commentary and scientific ideas (he studied biology under Thomas Huxley). There are also a wide variety of characters with interesting lives that lived at the turn of the 20th century. A must read for any true science fiction aficionado, this will keep you occupied until 802,701 A.D. or perhaps a bit sooner!!

Best Cookbook Bar None

If you are the kind of person who loves boxed cakes with Crisco icing that's so sweet it burns your teeth, don't bother with this book. If on the other hand you actually possess working taste buds, you will find that this cookbook offers the finest selection of cake recipes in existence. Although there are some very elaborate recipes in this book, the heart and soul of it is in the basic cakes and icings. Ms. Levy has gone back and actually taken the trouble to figure out what makes cake work and has therefore been able to improve on recipes and methods. Most of the recipes in this book exchange sweetness for flavor. Therefore the chocolate cake has a deep, intense chocolate-y taste that requires a complimentary icing (or at least a glass of milk). That's the way cake is supposed to be (before they added all the preservatives and moisturizers). If anyone disliked the buttercream icing they either didn't make it right or they are out of their mind. I personally don't care for icings made with egg yolks (too rich) but the icing made with beaten egg whites is pretty much the best thing you could ever frost a cake with and (as stated in the book) flavors magnificently. Ms. Levy's raspberry sauce is better and more intense than most of the sauces I've had in the best restaurants and the same holds true for most of the other fillings.
If anyone doubts that this book is a treasure I offer the simple fact of wedding cakes. To wit, how many times have you seen people actually eat and enjoy a wedding cake? Usually most of it is left over to be thrown out (appropriately). When I have made wedding cakes using this book there has never been a crumb left and people talk about it for years afterward.
Baking is tricky, it's not like cooking where you can make adjustments to fix things. I'm quite surprised when a baking recipe works right off the bat, I expect to blow it the first time out. This book is not about following a few simple steps and cranking out a good cake. The Cake Bible is one of the foundational cookbooks in my collection and by far the most often used. I agree that the binding could be better but who needs photos of plain chocolate cake? Books with pictures are for coffee tables, this book is for the kitchen. I would recommend it to anyone with a passion for baking.
