Wonderful Series: The Cat Who by Lilian Jackson Braun

The first ten books, my knowledge at this point, of the 29 books in the series are wonderful, engaging, humorous and full of mystery! These are worth buying. Lilian Jackson Braun is a genius! All the books purchased from Amazon of this series have been in excellent condition: as advertised. These are great gifts. I love reading and listening to them simultaneously; the full series is recorded on tape and disk and performed by George Guidall who did an outstanding job. Reading and listening at the same time is working, as well, for my 93 year old mother who has Alzheimer. When she gets tired of reading, she closes her eyes and listens. We get our audio books from the library.

WOW! WOW! WOW! This book was so fantastic.

Wow! This story was so intense and a very,very emotional one at that. It's the type of story that completely sucks you in right from the very beginning, and it just won't let you go.

The whole back story of how this story came to be:

The monarchs, Jo and Guff, found each other and fell in love during their late thirties. They bought a ranch with a big house, hoping they could fill it with lots of children. That wasn't to be, though. It just so happened that Jo came down with her first bout of cancer, and had to have a hysterectomy.......squelching all hopes of having a big family of their own one day. But that didn't detour those two from persuring their dreams of having a big family, altogether. No. They decided that they'd either adopt, or take in foster children to fullfill their needs. Which they did.

Quinn was Jo's cousin's only child, and was living in the system when they finally found him and took him in. By that time he was a very troubled 14 yr old teenager, full of hate. They had been told by the DCF authorities, that he had witnessed many torrid fights between his parents throughout his childhood, but none was as devastating as the night he had watched his father, in a raging fit of jealousy, kill his mother in cold blood, before finally turning the gun on himself. Jo and Guff knew he was only lashing out because he felt so lost and hurt by things that had happened to him in the past. Though years of patience and understanding, they finally managed to turn his life around by showering him with unconditional love and acceptance. That was something that Quinn had never experienced before, and over time he came to love and respect them for all they had done for him. He wasn't the only one they took in, either. In the next few years they had added two other teenage males to the mix, and also Easton-----Jo's sister only child, a daughter who was only ten yrs old at the time----after her parents were killed in a car accident. They all became like one happy family, and Jo and Guff became more than just foster parents to all of them. They much more to these kids than they ever thought was possible. But as most children tend to do, when they became of legal age.... the boys all took off to explore the world, leaving Easton behind. They all came together once again 11 yrs later at the family home, when Guff had a sudden massive heart attack that took his life. They all left within a week after the furneral, though, and hadn't returned again until 4 yrs later when Quinn recieved a call from Easton, informing him that Jo was dying of the last stage of breast cancer.

And that's where this whole story begins:
Quinn has just returned home from Seattle, and was feverishly trying to get a hold of his other to siblings to let them know what was going on with Jo. He prayed everyday that he'd be successful, before her life came to an end. But what had really taken him aback, was the fact that the one person he despised the most growing up, Tess Claybourne, was now one of the hospice nurses taking care of Jo's medical needs..

Raeanne Thayne writes stories about Cold Creek that are always a good, quick, read. She always has new twists and turns in her romance stories and I enjoy reading them. Just enough drama to keep me interested.

Excellent book

This book is very good and easy to read. It helped me to realize that one of my main reasons why I haven't achieved the level of success and fulfillment I'm after is because I've allowed my success to depend too much on my non-talents. I now know what I need to do.

The only thing I don't like is that when I did the Genius profile as an activity, the author said he'd send me the results but I never got them. That's why I give this a 4-star review versus a 5-star. I hate when people say they will do something and not do it.

Excellent book on yoga

This is one of the most useful books on yoga asana I have read in a while. Srivatsa Ramaswami present a multitude of vinyasas, i.e. flowing asana sequences. There are virtually hundreds of variations for students depending on their level. I thin kthe book really tries to make the reader undersatnd that in yoga achievement is not the thing we are looking for.

I woud say that the book is for students who have practiced a little bit, especailly that the problem of sequencing the various vinyasas is tackled.

I would highly recommend the book.

This book is a treasure

The father of modern yoga, Shri Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) used to tell his students that yoga was "India's greatest gift to the world." Through his long career as a respected scholar and yoga teacher, he resurrected many of the old practices and adapted them to the requirements of the modern world. Many prominent yoga masters studied under his guidance, including T. K. V. Desikachar (his own son, and developer of the yoga style called Viniyoga - born in 1938), Indra Devi (1899-2002), B. K. S. Iyengar (perhaps the best known current yoga teacher in the world, born in 1918), Pattabhi Jois (founder of Vinyasa Yoga, 1915-2009), and Srivatsa Ramaswami (born in 1939) who studied under his direction for 33 years and was the master's longest-standing student.

Ramaswami had the advantage of being close to Krishnamacharya during his last years, when the master emphasized the necessity to adapt yoga teaching to the needs of each student. Ramaswami criticizes many of the current yoga styles as being "blatantly aggressive." In his previous book, Yoga for the Three Stages of Life (Rochester, VY: Inner Traditions, 2000) he planned to rescue many of Krishnamacharya's teachings but it included few representative asanas (`poses'). The new book proposes to revive a particular approach that he calls Vinyasa Krama (Vinyasa: `sequence' and Krama: `tool' or `method'). This approach consists of sequences and subroutines, focusing the mind on the breath and applying the proper bandhas (`locks').

Ramaswami's book on Vinyasa yoga is a treasure. The new book is a continuation of his previous one and has a comprehensive presentation of more than 900 asanas and their variations. The 12 chapters cover all the basic sequences, giving particular emphasis to how to come into each pose, how to stay in the pose, and how to come out. He also pays particular attention to the proper breathing for each pose. It is very didactic; each pose is ranked according to the level of difficulty (one to five diamonds), and is beautifully illustrated. It also includes an audio CD with some Sanskrit chants that could be used to accompany the performance of the asanas. The CD also has a complete recitation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (the author of the first book written about yoga).

Ramaswami has been teaching in India for more than 25 years and regularly visits the United States, where he has been directing a teaching training programme at Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles). He has offered intense yoga training during his numerous visits to New York (Kripalu, the Himalayan Institute, and Integral Yoga) and gave a Master Class to the Yoga Club at the United Nations, in June 2007.

Helpful, thoughtful, bland

Mr. Carlisle's Elegant Complexity is a helpful scaffolding system for an understanding of the late David Foster Wallace's Magnum opus. Elegant Complexity structures the chapters, sections, and subsections of Wallace's Infinite Jest into an organized whole. However, it is bland. But this is a good thing. It does not force an interpretation down your throat, it merely states what is what, and offers the minimalist of hints as to further exploration of meaning and interpretation. In this regard Elegant Complexity is a success.

Take your time and read Infinite Jest and skip this "study" of it.

I ordered this book on the strength of the reviews and an overestimation of the complexity of Infinite Jest. The fact that Elegant Complexity is promoted as "spoiler free" indicates more of a companion piece than a study of the novel itself. I do not want to take anything away from the reviewers as I can see value in this type of book if, for example, Infinite Jest was required reading and not your cup of tea. This could make it easier to comprehend, but it would certainly appear to me to take the joy out of reading Infinite Jest (and it was a joy). I read the Introduction and first chapter review and realized that Elegant Complexity was not going to enhance my comprehension of the book, but would certainly take away my enjoyment of it. Needless to say, I put the book down and spent the next several weeks thoroughly enjoying Infinite Jest. After I finished the novel, I went back and looked over Elegant Complexity to see if perhaps it could be utilized as a review and I found that it did not include much of anything I missed and failed to discuss items I would have considered relevant in a companion work like this. I found myself referring to the novel to fill the gaps left in some of the summary information in an early chapter review in Elegant Complexity, which seemed odd to me and compelled me to share my thoughts. If you are dedicated to reading Infinite Jest for pleasure, I would suggest taking your time and reading the book and skipping the "spoiler-free" guide. Infinite Jest can be complex when compared to much of today's popular novels, but it is worth the effort. I applaud the effort to make David Foster Wallace more accessible to the average reader, but I just do not see this achieving that objective and I personally expected much more.

Deconstructing The Jest.

The surest way to ruin a joke is to explain it. It seems that elegance functions similarly. This book - exhaustive on its chosen subject - lacks any praiseworthy style in writing.

To call it a study is misleading. It is only a guide, though it _is_ a commendable guide.

What it comes down to is a very explicit and formulaic cliffsnotes: summarize a passage, extract the themes, explain them ad. naus. While I don't think most of the people who read "Jest" in its entirety in the first place will need guidance with everything "complexity" offers, I think it does offer points "Jest" scholars will enjoy exploring further.

"Elegant Complexity" is neither, but this only serves to provide a little insight in less than a few thousand pages. It's good for what it is - an explicit guide. Make sure that it's what you want.

Ten Little Indians / And Then There Were None

There is a classic murder mystery story known as "the locked room mystery". Someone is found murdered in a room locked from the inside. No one could have left the room! How did it happen? In this story the locked room is an island where no one can enter or leave. The ten people on this island are murdered one by one. An old nursery rhyme of "ten little Indians" provides a blueprint for the mysterious deaths. Logically, the last survivor would be the presumed murderer, by the process of elimination. But what if this assumption was wrong? It may not sound rational but this story makes it appear so.

Ten people are invited or hired to visit Indian Island off the coast of Devon. After a good meal there is a recorded voice that accuses them of murder. The visitors begin dying off in the manner of that nursery rhyme. After searching the island they realize the murderer is one of the guests! Knowing this does not prevent more deaths. This story keeps your interest until the very end. Scotland Yard cannot figure out the solution until a message was found in a bottle at sea. The movie version modified and enhanced this story. No plan is ever perfect because of the many things that can happen.

This is an example of the classic English murder mystery. The murder exists to provide an intellectual puzzle to entertain the reader. The participants are mostly the middle-class, not average people. The scene is in a large house owned by a rich man. Raymond Chandler pointed out the differences in his essay "The Simple Art of Murder". Most murders occur because of lust or greed, to get it or to keep it. Chandler commented on the highly artificial murder plots which multiply clues that experienced detectives would see through. I found a clue in Chapter IX (but I had seen the movie decades ago).

Chapter XI references one locked room mystery in America. An old gentleman and his wife were killed with an axe. The maid couldn't have done it; the respectable middle-aged daughter was acquitted. No other explanation was ever found. Who killed them? [Arnold Brown's book explains it was done by someone who was kept hidden.]
